EMG : ENDURING FRIENDSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIP

EAST MELBOURNE GLEN CHAPTER MEMBERS HAVE AN ABIDING LOVE FOR SCOTCH
The East Melbourne Glen Chapter was established in 1982 to recognise those Old Boys who had been students at East Melbourne or who were at Hawthorn while East Melbourne was in operation . Initially conceived as a reunion dinner opportunity , the EMG primarily owes its existence to the foresight and drive of Sir Thomas Meek Ramsay (’ 24 ), and former Director of Development , Peter Crook , and has since evolved to become a valued way to connect with our oldest Old Boys . Membership of the Chapter is open to every Old Scotch Collegian who is 75 or older – one ’ s year of birth grants automatic membership to all .
We in the Foundation see the EMG , which presently numbers some 2300 members , as the School ’ s way of recognising our special Old Boys .
The Foundation , as a general rule , hosts three EMG functions a year : an Easter Chapel Service , a Winter Lunch and a Christmas Lunch . The Chapter , which is purely a social group , has a small committee , currently led by Chairman Ken Jasper AM (’ 55 ), which helps to organise these functions , along with speakers of interest . In the invitation , members are encouraged to bring their spouse or another friend , as these lunches – always
fully subscribed , buoyant and laughter filled – are most enjoyable informal occasions .
Although the Chapter is not a fundraising group , and does not in any way purport to be , many of our EMG members also happen to be thoroughly generous benefactors of programs and developments undertaken by the School over many years , for which they have our sincere thanks and appreciation .
The Foundation enjoys a very close affection for , and relationship with , its EMG members : without doubt , they are a genial , jovial and loyal group , and clearly the affection is reciprocated ; their abiding love for Scotch runs deep .
In a year where the expected and customary has been thoroughly turned on its head , all of us in the Development Office – Tim Shearer (’ 85 ), Rebecca Mortimer , Sandra Dick , David Ashton (’ 65 ), Paul Mishura , Scott Montgomery (’ 85 ), Lisa Sheard and Patty Wallace- Smith – have felt very keenly the physical absence of our EMG members , but , as the following articles attest , determination and technology won out , and the EMG still found a way to keep in touch !
