The Percussion Department is usually a very busy communal hub , with many boys sharing many instruments in a constant stream of concerts . This year , however , has been the complete opposite , with the boys isolated at home – many without any instruments at all . Therefore , we decided to make a Percussion Department video , involving as many boys as possible in a piece written by David Dower (‘ 08 ). Seventy-four boys submitted their videos , some playing snare drums , some buckets , tubs and even boxes . Campbell Phillips (‘ 06 ) then did all the video and audio editing . Most importantly , we all had fun creating a somewhat tongue-in-cheek tribute to 2020 .
Large group performances inspired our smaller groups . Two saxophone groups created superb virtual recordings , bringing jazz saxophone quartets to life . Our wind quintet recorded Tibetan Dance by Xlyi Ge , demonstrating mature interpretation , great rhythmic accuracy and mature ensemble skills . Such a performance demonstrates a great ability to adapt and innovate , ensuring ongoing skill development in a new context .
Our Junior School and Year 7 instrumental music classes continued online . In Years 5 and 6 , woodwind boys learnt a fun piece , Samba-lele . This recording will be part of the Years 5 and 6 concert celebrating achievements of the year . Our Year 7 instrumental classes each created recordings , representing what would usually be performed in a live concert .
Boys at all year levels have reflected on these achievements . They are immensely proud of their part in creating our ensembles in innovative ways , and of the new skills they have developed . Many boys have been surprised at the focus required to perform accurately for recording , but appreciate their skill development . This will enhance our ensembles as we recommence live performance . As Tianyi Yu ( Year 11 ) reflected , this process has given great appreciation of the joy of ensemble performance . It has also given boys a common purpose , connecting community in distanced times .
