BOYS IN THEIR LATIN CLASS WITH DR GARLAND
Latin is thriving at Scotch College . There are now 136 Latin students from Years 9 to 12 , who show particular passion and eagerness to learn . Latin teaches the boys grammatical structures and vocabulary , enhancing their knowledge and use of English , as well as developing their problemsolving and lateral thinking skills .
Students in Year 9 Latin chanted out their first declensions and conjugations in order to build up the fundamentals of the language . They read stories dealing with everyday life and the mythology of Ancient Rome , completing the year with thorough knowledge of the case system and an induction into the culture of the Classical world .
In Year 10 , boys continued their rapid accumulation of grammar and vocabulary , studying all verb tenses and a number of key constructions . Year 10s enjoyed further study of Roman culture and society , as well as key moments in Roman history , including the growth of the Roman Republic .
At Year 11 , students completed their study of each feature of Latin grammar , while building up their vocabulary further . They studied Caesar ’ s account of his wars in Gaul , and began their first study of epic poetry , focusing on selections from Virgil ’ s Aeneid .
The Year 12 students translated numerous passages from authors such as Cicero , Caesar , Livy , Sallust and Valerius
Maximus in preparation for the VCE examination . This year ’ s focus was on the first book of Virgil ’ s epic poem , The Aeneid , which recounts Aeneas ’ quest to found Roman civilisation .
