Celebrating half a century of great bowls and relaxing fellowship

Bowls Club rolls up to its 50th anniversary

This month , the Old Scotch Bowls Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary . The club was founded in December 1970 by Scotch ’ s Vice Principal from 1935-56 , H H ‘ Bosh ’ Bowden ( SC 1901-07 ).
Unfortunately , because of the coronavirus pandemic the club has had to put on hold its celebration of this milestone until early in the new year , when things should be back to normal again . Members and special guests will meet for an anniversary luncheon in the Cardinal Club .
The bowls club is getting ready to commence bowling again . Our season restarts in January , with the first match scheduled on 20
January against the APS clubs Old Melburnians , Old Wesley and Old Caulfield Grammarians .
Our club provides opportunities for all members of the wider Scotch Family , men and women , to enjoy the activity of bowling and socialising in a relaxed and informal format . The Old Scotch Bowls Club plays matches against fellow APS clubs on Wednesday afternoons through a limited 11-game season from September to April .
If you are looking to develop a new interest in your retirement and enjoy the friendship and fellowship of members of the Scotch Family , vacancies are now available for men and women to join the club .
The Old Scotch Bowls Club offers :
• a relaxed and informal atmosphere and bowling environment ;
• the opportunity to play as many or as few games as members wish ;
• a great way to stay active and enjoy the friendship and fellowship of members of the Scotch Family ;
• first class clubhouse and green facilities on two MCC rinks at Glen Street and Swinburne Avenue , Hawthorn ; and
• inexpensive membership and match day fees .
No bowling experience is necessary and free beginners ’ classes are available . Members of the Scotch Family who are members of other bowling clubs are most welcome to join our club .

FILM SOCIETY GOES TO THE MOVIES

Society adapts to the unique times
OLD SCOTCH FILM SOCIETY COMMITTEE MEETING AND LUNCHEON AT KOOYONG TENNIS CLUB IN FEBRUARY 2020
In February this year , a keen Old Scotch Film Society committee met to plan an exciting year of films , convivial suppers and even a Scottish festival . But plans changed !
After the February film , all movie-going ceased . Knowing how important it would be to keep members connected during the period of COVID-19 isolation , the committee quickly started an online mini-movie society . Using movies from SBS On Demand and other free sites , members viewed chosen films , shared email responses , and joined Zoom discussions .
This has been a movie lifeline , producing some very animated discussion . In fact , the committee is exploring a hybrid model of film society , whereby the year ’ s program may include monthly movies at Scotch , as well as regular online offerings .
This year has presented the film society with opportunities to plan for change . We have updated the constitution , completed a Memorandum of Understanding with OSCA , produced a safety plan , conducted an ‘ electronic ’ AGM , and most importantly kept our members involved and entertained .
