MESSAGE FROM THE HON . DR DAVID KEMP AC

Serving the School as Chairman of Council for the last eight years has been a great privilege and honour . Now , with the pandemic under control , and with the School in robust health and looking to the future , this is an appropriate moment to hand over to a new Chairman .
I am delighted that Alex Sloan (’ 71 ) will be my successor in the Chair of Council . No-one knows Scotch better than Alex , nor loves it more , and I am delighted that he has been prepared to take on the responsibilities of Council Chairman . I am confident that Alex will provide the School with the leadership it needs to continue to thrive , and he will do so with my full support and best wishes .
Mr Sloan was a member of the Council from 2007 to 2014 , and returned to Council in 2019 . He attended Scotch from 1965 to 1971 and was Captain of the Junior School in 1966 . His grandfather , Alexander Barclay Sloan , coached 20 Scotch Head of the River crews to seven wins . Among many other relatives , Alex ’ s father Bruce (’ 32 ), uncles Alex ( School Captain in ’ 24 ) and John (’ 24 ) and son Simon (’ 04 ) all attended Scotch . He has grandsons booked for 2028 and 2030 . Alex played in the 1st XVIII and rowed in the 1st VIII in 1970 and 1971 , and was a School Prefect , House Captain and Captain of Boats in 1971 .
At Melbourne University Alex studied Commerce , graduating in 1975 . He rowed in five Kings Cup crews from 1977-81 with wins in ’ 79 and ’ 80 ; he also represented Australia at the World Rowing Championships in 1979 . Alex was appointed President of the Old Scotch Collegians ’ Association in 2011 and was made an Honorary Life Member of the association in 2014 . He is a company director and has a number of philanthropic involvements .
In leaving the Chair , I first thank the members of the School Council for the hundreds of hours of unpaid work they devote to supporting the School in its mission to provide the best possible education for boys , and their dedication to the continuous improvement of the School . Through their work , with the support of parents and the whole Scotch Family , we now have the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science , the Spencer Centre for Design and Technology , the Keon-Cohen Dining Hall , the new English Department , and many other improvements to support teaching and learning .
The Standing Committees of Council – Finance , Investment , Property and Risk – have had outstanding leadership respectively from their Chairs , respectively Hamish Tadgell (' 85 ), Jonathan Buckley (' 83 ), Mike
