THE BLAZER – BRINGING HUMOUR TO BOYS ’ BUSY SCHOOL LIVES

An amusing spin on the staples of Scotch life
It ’ s 2017 . The day is overcast . Two boys – visionaries of their time – enter the school grounds with a single goal in their minds . Before the day is over , they ’ ve consulted with school leadership , navigated countless challenges , negotiated terms , and at last , established a new magazine to be circulated . On this day , these boys – Andrew Kroger and Miche Nehme – set into being what has come to be known as The Blazer : a rejuvenation of the satirical Scotch Spirit heralded by Satura in previous decades .
Student-created and student-run , The Blazer is a satirical publication which seeks to bring humour to boys among the busy schedules of school life , putting an amusing spin on our normal routines . Whether it be shocking reports about the effects of the Tuckshop on the health of the Scotch pigeon population , or delving into the discreet political discourse and alleged power plays between the senior staff members , The Blazer has provided an avenue for students to escape the stresses of our lives for an enjoyable read .
The Blazer is a publication I am honoured to have been a part of in my time at Scotch . As editor , I have watched The Blazer grow to a unique outlet of the student voice , and I have seen the power of satirical articles , not only in bringing humour to the lives of students but in encouraging critical thinking about the issues that can be satirised .
The Blazer has allowed boys to immerse themselves in a new world of reading , and brought new views and perspectives to students of all year levels – all of course while poking fun at staples of Scotch life .
In 2020 , among the COVID-19 pandemic , The Blazer played a large part in boosting morale . Among the lockdowns in Melbourne , The Blazer coronavirus edition was a welcome distraction for many students , and a way for countless boys to stay connected and in tune with the Scotch Spirit , even through online learning . With new articles published weekly , students from all year levels and classes were able to reconnect with the Scotch culture and lighten up their days .
Boys ' voice is the cornerstone of schooling at Scotch , and as one of the first student-written and edited newsletters in the School , The Blazer has been proudly one of the most open outlets of this since its founding in 2017 . As we move out of these tumultuous times , I ’ m sure The Blazer will continue to be the pride of the Scotch satirical spirit , and a bonding force for students for years to come .
