OBITUARIES
Werner ( SC 1966-78 ) and Peter Werner ( SC 1968-79 ). Like his cousin , Carl Werner , Carl played rugby with the St Kilda Rugby Union Football Club .
In 1957 Carl graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from Melbourne University . As a young engineer , he worked for 11 years for MIM at Mount Isa , Queensland . In 1962 he was granted a Rotary scholarship for postgraduate study in business at Stanford University in California . In 1969 Carl joined the head office of MIM in Brisbane , working in various senior positions worldwide . He completed Harvard University ’ s International Senior Managers ’ Program in 1983 .
From 1990 to 1991 Carl was General Manager ( Europe ) for MIM Holdings in London before he was posted to Germany as Managing Director of a zinc smelter acquired by MIM . Returning to Brisbane in 1994 , Carl worked for MIM until retiring in 1995 . From then until 2011 , Carl acted as a private consultant to the minerals industry as Carl W Hoffman & Associates . He was a director of the Brisbane Market Authority , and also of mining company Chambigne Garnet Pty Ltd .
On 12 January 2005 Carl married Mrs Gisela ( nee Klette ) Ramdohr at Buderim , Queensland . They lived on the Sunshine Coast from 1997 , and in Germany from 2005 until 2016 , when they returned to Australia . As supporters of Scotch , they became members of the Scotch College Foundation .
Carl died on the Sunshine Coast , Queensland , on 14 April 2020 . He is survived by Gisela , sons Philipp and Nicolas , and stepdaughter Gabi .
JONES , John Cadwallader (’ 47 )
John ’ s family wrote :
John Cadwallader Jones was born on 31 December 1930 at home at Canterbury , the son of Llewellyn Camm Jones ( born 25 February 1897 , SC 1909-13 , died 10 September 1956 ) and Amy Lucy
Jones ( nee Paton ). John attended Scotch from 1941 to 1947 in Monash House .
Also at Scotch were his cousin , Llewellyn Alexander Sandison Yule ( born 26 August 1930 , SC 1939-47 died 22 January 1951 ), uncle John Paton ( born 17 July 1890 , SC 1905-06 , died 13 November 1976 ), son Michael ( SC 1974-82 ), and grandsons Charles Austin ( SC 2007-12 ) and Henry Gosper ( SC 2007-12 ).
John graduated with Honours in Law from Melbourne University ( 1951 ), and gained a Bachelor of Civil Law from Brasenose College , Oxford University . He sat Middle Temple exams ( 1954 ) and was called to the English Bar .
In 1955 John joined Melbourne solicitors Russell Kennedy & Cook . He entered the Victorian Bar ( 1958 ) but returned to Russell Kennedy & Cook that year to accept a partnership , retiring in 1990 . The firm wrote : ‘[ John ] is fondly remembered … for his skills as a lawyer … great wit and sense of humour … [ He was ] a renowned commercial property lawyer who [ was ] one of the pioneers in establishing public property trusts in Australia .’
At Oxford , John met Joy Etherington while travelling . They married at Mont Albert Methodist Church on 19 January 1957 , enjoying a happy marriage until Joy ’ s death on 8 December 2009 . As well as Michael , they had three daughters : Liz , Megan , and Cathy .
John served on various boards , chaired Travellers Aid , and was a member of Melbourne University ’ s Convocation . From 1957 he attended St John ’ s Methodist ( later Uniting ) Church , Mount Waverley . John was a lay preacher , active in many committees .
John and Joy enjoyed the English countryside , and their Mount Martha holiday home in summer . They devotedly attended St John ’ s on Sundays and supported the Magpies . They took pride in their 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren . On 12 June 2014 John married an American , Virginia O ’ Connor , on Sea Island , Georgia , USA . They lived in America and Australia .
John died on 27 April 2020 at Palm Beach , Florida , after a short illness .
KEMP AM , Professor Andrew Stewart (’ 59 )
Andrew ’ s brother , Chris (’ 67 ), wrote :
Andrew Stewart Kemp was born on 3 June 1942 at St Andrew ’ s Hospital , East Melbourne , the son of Old Boy Leonard Denton Kemp ( born 6 June 1909 , SC 1922-27 , died 21 January 2009 ). His Scotch connections dated back to his great-grandfather , George Denton ( born 15 September 1851 , SC 1860 , died 3 August 1913 ), and include his son Charles ( SC 1990-95 ), cousins David ( SC 1949-59 ) and Rod Kemp ( SC 1952-63 ), uncle Charles Denton ( Ref ) Kemp ( born 23 April 1911 , SC 1924-29 , died 24 June 1993 ) and grandfather Charles Herbert Kemp ( born 4 April 1874 , SC 1886-91 , died 19 June 1937 ).
Attending Scotch from 1950 to 1960 , Andrew ’ s favourite subject was Biology , taught by the memorable ‘ Auntie ’ Vi Woolcock . A literary child , Andrew won the Junior School poetry prize for writing This is Everest , and he was a 1960 Satura Co Editor . He played in the 4th XI and 2nd Hockey teams . Throughout his life , Andrew maintained contact with Scotch mates Geoff Hindle , Keith Stokes and Mac Dilley .
At Melbourne University in 1966 Andrew graduated second out of 152 students in his final year of Medicine . There , he met Sally Winifred Myrtle Kent , whom he married at Scotch on 7 March 1972 . Their daughters are Celia and Alice .
In 2002 Andrew was appointed Inaugural Professor of Paediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the Children ’ s Hospital at Westmead , Sydney . In 2017 he was honoured with an appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia ( AM ) for services to children ’ s immunology in the clinical , research and teaching fields . He published more than 200 peer-reviewed research papers .
Perhaps Andrew ’ s enduring professional legacy was as a demanding , but much loved , caring and humble mentor to several current leading Australian authorities in paediatric allergy .
