WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE CALLANTINA ROAD BOARDING HOUSE GATES ?

pic

From at least the 1875 completion of Glen House until their removal in 1973 , four gates – two vehicular and two pedestrian – stood at the entrance to the Hill on the corner of Glenferrie and Callantina Roads . Scotch ’ s fence and pillars were designed in 1917 , and reused the 1870s gates . Only one , on display outside Archives for decades , is known to have survived .
Do you remember them being taken down in 1973 ? What can you tell us about them coming down , or in the years after their removal ? What do you know about the ultimate fate of the other three gates ? Do you have any photographs of the gates in situ , or as they were being removed ?
I thank boarder Scott McKay ( SC 1970-75 ) for his initiative in contacting fellow boarders to pin down when they were removed . Those with more information should contact the Archivist : paul . mishura @ scotch . vic . edu . au .
