DISAPPOINTMENT , BUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW

Great resilience in the face of a winter season that never was

This winter season will be remembered for many years to come . Questions will no doubt arise when people look through the records to see that no winter sport premierships were awarded in 2020 . The impact of the coronavirus has been far-reaching , with obvious health , economics and educational impacts .
When the final round of summer sport was cancelled due to the threat of the pandemic , many of us did not envisage lasting implications for the winter and , potentially , the spring sports seasons – let alone entering a second period of remote learning .
The best planning of the APS to accommodate the initial period of restrictions saw the winter season extended until the end of Term 3 . The School endeavored to provide some online resources , with running and conditioning programs devised for all of the boys . The Directors of Coaching in AFL football , soccer , hockey , basketball and rugby union provided online programs , including skills drills in line with changing government guidelines .
As our Years 11 and 12 boys returned to school , our Teachers-in- Charge , coaches and the Directors of Coaching put in place training in small groups of 10 for sports outside , with strict protocols around social distancing , using hand sanitiser before and after sessions and having equipment disinfected . While sessions were non-compulsory , the boys voted with their feet , exemplified by well over 100 boys turning up for football training . As the weeks progressed and
