MUSIC

THE CONCERTS HAVE ENDED ,

BUT THE MUSIC LINGERS ON !

Despite the closure , there have been a number of projects and activities
The first concert of the year was given by the Symphony Orchestra , and featured an international guest cellist , Matthias Balzat , in a complete performance of Dvorak ’ s Cello Concerto . It was a remarkable and thrilling performance . Sadly , that was the final performance before the COVID-19 closure .
Despite the closure , there has been a number of projects and activities . The Chamber Choir , under Andrew Hunter , produced a beautiful unaccompanied performance of Loch Lomond that was used for the opening of the 2020 International Boys ’ Schools Coalition virtual conference in July . Boys recorded their parts at home , and these were mixed with some socially-distanced choristers singing in the Ian Roach Hall .
The String Department produced a video performance that was professionally filmed in sections , and involved boys from Year 2 to Year 12 . An impressive production . In addition , masterclasses with Australian and international musicians have been held via Zoom .
The Percussion , Brass and Woodwind Departments all made online recordings . Years 5-7 percussion classes had some fun with themed weeks , including a DIY drum kit and Baby Yoda !
While the Piano Festival had to be cancelled , some aspects still took place , including the competition which was held by video recordings .
One area that deserves a mention was the recordings made for distribution to the aged care homes where musicians perform as part of services . These were warmly received and appreciated .
The Pipes and Drums managed two competitions before the pandemic – Daylesford in December and Ballarat in February . Our bands all won their respective sections .
Instrumental lessons have continued via Zoom , as have rehearsals for many of the ensembles . Some parents have commented that these lessons ( along with online rehearsals ) have been in welcome contrast to the online academic lessons . They have provided an opportunity for individual connection and conversations about creativity , artistry and aesthetics , as well as bringing something fun , physical and expressive into their otherwise closed environment .
There have been a number of significant individual achievements this year , and at the end of 2019 . A list of diploma successes is given
