TOP DESIGNS – SHOWCASING SCOTCH BOYS ’ ENTRIES

A glimpse into the future of Australian design
Year 12 boys Alex Daley and Joshua El-Khoury were exhibitors in Melbourne Museum ’ s Top Designs 2020 , held from 20 March to 12 July .
Top Designs 2020 showcases some of the brightest VCE and VCE / Vocational Education and Training students from across Victoria . The final selection of 88 works , chosen from more than 1000 submissions across a variety of disciplines , offers a glimpse into the future of Australian design .
The boys put into practice skills acquired through their study of Systems Engineering Units 3 and 4 to come up with their innovative designs . Alex Daley mixed his love for everything musical with his knowledge of physics and electronics to construct an automated guitar tuner , while Joshua put his programming and manufacturing skills to the test to develop an automated house blind system . This system can be programmed to raise and lower a blind under userdefined settings ; it was inspired by his own grandmother ’ s need for such a device , as she is afflicted by arthritis in her wrists .
Although the viewing of Top Designs was cancelled due to the pandemic , it is still possible to take a close look at the exhibition by taking a virtual tour via the following link , especially if you ’ re interested in cutting edge design : https :// museumsvictoria . com . au / melbournemuseum / learning / topdesigns-2020 /
