SCOTCH ’ S NEW STUDENT NEWSPAPER
The College Chronicle hits the digital newsstands
From Satura to The Scotch Collegian , student-driven publications have a rich tradition at Scotch . Now , our School has a new publication to complement this history – The College Chronicle – one of the first secondary school newspapers in Australia .
I first developed the idea of a student newspaper while on the Symphony Orchestra ’ s USA tour in January . Besides being able to enjoy the hotel copy of The Wall Street Journal in printed broadsheet form , I observed that each American high school we visited had a student newspaper .
While student newspapers and newspaper competitions are ubiquitous across the Pacific , such publications are relatively rare in Australia .
Having learnt about student newspaper editorial processes and publication formats in conversation with writers during music workshops , I resolved to bring this idea home to my peers and teachers . And indeed the response was electric . Hence The College Chronicle was born .
The College Chronicle is powered by a growing writing team of student journalists from Years 7 to 12 who work tirelessly together to create a publication that chronicles not only news across Scotch and beyond , but also the student voice .
With a desire to give writers carte blanche , the end product is a newspaper that features a diversity of content : from historical reflections and opinion pieces on current topical issues to economic analyses and forecasts – a meaningful trove of knowledge and insight , particularly relevant in an age of overwhelming spin and disinformation .
Beyond fostering student opinion and serving as a record for future generations , the publication has also embraced technology , publishing its first edition digitally and managing its entire writing process on a virtual Kanban board – a visual workflow representation .
We hope that in the years to come , once this coronavirus pandemic buries itself in history ’ s tome , The College Chronicle can continue to grow as a publication ‘ by the students , for the students ’ of Scotch College .
