In ‘ What they ’ re doing now ’ ( Great Scot , May 2020 ), two names were given as joint Duces of Scotch College in 1966 . This was incorrect : there was a single Dux of Scotch College in that year : ROGER STUART CLARKE (’ 66 ).

1940s

IAN BAINBRIDGE (‘ 47 ) is one of a dwindling number of Melbourne University educated engineers who did the first year of their degree course at the university ’ s Mildura branch , which was a residential campus for all staff and students .
As a project engineer / manager , Ian ’ s career was largely spent on planning and building plants for manufacturing chemicals and plastic resins . Ian and his family lived and worked in various Australian states , as well as overseas in New Jersey , USA , and Manchester , UK .
Ian married Wendy Sharpe at the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel in 1965 , and they have two daughters and two grandsons . Wendy was brought up in Rutherglen , so Ian had an introduction to all the vignerons in the district , which he was able to use to advantage . Ian has been skiing for more than 50 years , regularly in Australia and also in many resorts in Europe , the USA and Japan .
PETER SALTHOUSE (’ 48 ) enjoyed his time at Scotch . He was Form Captain of Remove B in 1945 , he coxed the winning 5th VIII in 1946 , and in his final year of 1948 he was a member of the 1st XVIII and was Captain of the Gardiner House tennis team . After leaving school and a brief foray into agriculture , Peter attained a Diploma of Industrial Management at RMIT .
In the mid-1950s Peter began the first of several ventures into manufacturing furniture , culminating in the incorporation of DYFA Productions Pty Ltd and an importing company , XIM Pty Ltd . In the early 1970s , he floated Duro Designs Pty Ltd and manufactured steel powder coated children ’ s cots .
Peter married his beloved Margot in March 1954 at Scotch Chapel , and they have four children , KIM (’ 72 ), GUY (’ 73 ), Craig and Prue , all of whom have delightful families . Peter and Margot are now retired and living on the Mornington Peninsula , where they are members of the Blairgowrie Community Garden and the McCrae Yacht Club .

1950s

IAN KNIGHT OAM (’ 53 ) has been very active in the City of Wyndham . Among many projects , he initiated Manor Court Werribee Aged Care in 1972 . He was Chairman of the facility ’ s board for 14 years and continues on the board . He was also a long-term President of the Werribee Chamber of Commerce .
Ian was a founder of the Werribee Rotary Club in 1968 ; he was a Rotary District Governor in 1987 / 88 , and has led or been closely involved in Rotary projects such as polio eradication , training for midwives in Timor Leste , a bore well project in Uganda , and bringing a young Ugandan from a not-for-profit farm to Australia for training . Ian has received two of Rotary International ’ s highest awards – the Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award and the Rotary Service Above Self Award .
He was Wyndham ’ s Citizen of the Year in 1996 , and received an Order of Australia award in 2006 ‘ for service to the community of the City of Wyndham , particularly through aged care services , and Rotary International ’. In October 1993 , a group of Old Boys led by DOUG CALLISTER (’ 48 ) and including PETER FISHLEY (’ 52 ), BOB MORAN (’ 54 ), JOHN FINDLAY (’ 55 ), PETER HALL (’ 55 ), PETER ALLARD (’ 55 ) and DOUG JOHNSON (’ 56 ) trekked together in Nepal . Every October since then a number of them have lunched together with their partners .
In Nepal , they met the Headmaster of Paudwar Secondary School . Learning of the school ’ s needs , they emptied their pockets of spare coins . After returning to Australia and Doug Callister ’ s untimely death in December 1993 , the rest of the group decided to make a modest annual donation to the school in memory of Doug and his care for the Nepali children .
The project has grown exponentially over the years , with a focus on training teachers and improving education via a program called Quality Education Nepal . LEARN (‘ Lifting Education , Advancing Rural Nepal ’) was established as a local non-government organisation . A fund of $ 1.5 million is now providing income to sustain its operations .
