The Old Scotch Rugby Club has announced Max Pendlebury ( Year 12 ), Scotch ’ s 2020 Captain of Rugby , as the winner of the club ’ s 2019 Bill Morgan Award .
Max commenced his rugby career at six with the Boroondara Redbacks as a versatile back who seemed to be more suited to the rucking game . He played both club rugby and Australian Football until high school .
Max has always had a keen eye for the game and its technical rules , and post final siren has consistently been a reliable source for an insightful and confident summary of the match , its highlights and its challenges .
At Scotch Max has passionately taken his rugby to the next level . His desire for Scotch to do its best on the pitch has been clear , and some of the disappointments have stoked his hunger to prepare with his teammates for the next match .
Personal achievements in recent years include playing for the 1st XV in Years 10 , 11 and 12 ; selection in the Victorian Schools Rugby Union under 14 Tasmania tour ; selection alongside two other Scotch boys for the under 16 VSRU tour of the UK ; the 2018 Philippe Gyles Award for most outstanding Scotch youth player ; 2019 best back for the 1st XV , the Bruce Norton Club Champion Award , and the Colin Bell Trophy for the 1st XV versus Melbourne Grammar School , awarded by MGS . In 2020 he was selected in the VSRU ’ s Under 18 Merit Team . The Old Scotch Rugby Club presents the Bill Morgan Award annually to a Scotch player who epitomises the spirit of Scotch rugby . The award is named after Bill Morgan (’ 34 ) who captained the 1st XV in 1935 at full-back . ( He also rowed in the 1st VIII in 1933 and 1934 , and played in the 1st XVIII in 1934 .) Bill went on to be selected in the Australian Universities rugby side of 1938 .
Max has thoroughly enjoyed his off-field training . In 2019 , Max participated in the International Rugby Academy of New Zealand ’ s advanced players ’ program .
Max was honoured with the captaincy of the Scotch 1st XV this year but , sadly , didn ’ t have the opportunity to lead his team onto the field , owing to the impact of COVID-19 .
Former Scotch rugby players are encouraged to join OSRC by emailing OSRC Secretary , Martin Chesbrough on mchesbro @ gmail . com . Year 12 2020 rugby players automatically become OSRC members when they register with the OSRC .
