COMFORTABLY COOL
Fiji ’ s tropical heat is part of what draws couples to this island paradise . Just remember to take it into account when choosing your outfits if you both want to feel and look great on your big day .
Grooms should consider linen or cotton fabrics , which are far more breathable in tropical climates . Or opt for dress shorts and a button-down linen shirt for a relaxed island style .
Brides will also want to consider their hair and make-up look , especially in the summer months ( November to April ) when Fiji can be extremely humid and often wet . For make-up , the lighter , the better , while for hair , talk to your hair stylist about some easy-toaction styles for your wedding day .
ADD SOME CULTURE
Fiji is filled with a wealth of traditions and customs , and there are many ways to incorporate its rich and diverse culture into your wedding .
You could serve the local ceremonial and social drink , Kava , on arrival as a traditional Yaqona Ceremony . Known to be a gentle relaxant , it ’ s definitely an acquired taste but one that ’ s fun to try . Traditionally , the contents must be drunk all at once , and a clap once before or after drinking is required .
A ‘ Bili Bili ’ escort is another festive way to kick off your ceremony . You ’ ll be delivered to your waiting partner on a wedding throne adorned with flowers by Fijian warriors wearing traditional garb , or have them bring you ashore aboard a decorated canoe .
For traditional Fijian entertainment , have your venue arrange a ‘ Meke ’ performance , a joyful show of singing and music ( usually sitting on the ground ) accompanied by dancers wearing flower garlands , skirts made of grass or traditional warrior attire .
And of course , food is an excellent way to incorporate a little local flavour into your wedding . Ask your venue about a ‘ lovo ’ feast , using a traditional method of cooking underground with hot stones .
