A number of Chinese botanists came to RBGE in the 1930s and 1940s establishing connections which would continue for many years to come. This included Chen Fenghuai, known as the ‘father of Too much information Chinese botanic gardens’, who came to study in Edinburgh in 1933. RBGE staff continue to participate in regular expeditions to China with conservation now the driving force and botanists in both Scotland and China collaborating and working in equal partnership. The living collections at RBGE include more than 1,600 species of Chinese plants – the largest collection of Chinese plants outside of China. This includes the development of the Chinese Hillside which offers visitors a taste of the mountain habitat of Yunnan, with which RBGE has had a particularly long-standing relationship.
