How to select the perfect paint

Painting projects have the power to completely transform homes and give spaces an entirely new feel , but there are many things to consider before diving into one .
Do you want the space to feel warm , cozy and inviting ? Or do you want the space to feel vibrant and playful ? Choosing the appropriate paint color is the first step when giving new life to old walls . Although it can feel overwhelming , selecting the perfect color is achievable when taking the right steps .
There are two important elements to consider when initiating an interior painting project : existing colors and lighting .
" If there are colors that will remain in a room , such as flooring , countertops , tile or even furnishings , these existing colors can
help direct the colors that will work best on a wall ," said Andrea Magno , director of color marketing and design at Benjamin Moore . " For example , if a countertop has soft gray veining , a similar hue may be a great choice for the wall color ."
The amount of light in a room can determine how a color looks when the wall is painted . For example , a south-facing room with lots of light can be ideal for moody , dark hues . Spaces with limited or cooler light can benefit from lighter hues .
Outdoor materials like brick , stone , roofing and even landscape can influence the look of an exterior paint project . When deciding what color to opt for , a similar process can be used .
According to Magno , there ' s been a rise in earthy colors for the exterior , like deeper browns and greens . More homes are also being painted in deeper colors , like charcoal or darker blues .
