watercolor painting ,” said David .
He also teaches art at some senior living facilities to teach art in addition to visiting area homeschoolers , where he serves as art teacher for the day .
The pandemic affected the initial vision the Henzie ’ s had for their space . They kept their dream alive by maintaining a workspace to producing their art kits , which kept them going when the studio doors had to be closed . They also developed a number of other kits – paint-by-numbers and other takehome projects – for an additional source of income . They also began offering a selection of art supplies , because people have asked for those products .
“ It ’ s been five years since we started and word has gotten around ,” said David . “ We had a handful of homeschool students coming in per week , but now that number is closer to 150 homeschoolers per week .”
That large number includes attendees at the Gravette studio , plus visits to a homeschool academy in the area which has moved to various locations as far away as Fayetteville . Those physical settings have included a Boys & Girls Club , a church , a rented building , and now a local farm . On the farm , Henzie has a specific location among the buildings where he conducts art class for up to 24 students per class over four sessions .
The studio is 2,000 square feet , much of which the Henzie ’ s didn ’ t initially use . Now , David and Wendzie sometimes hold classes at the same time , which uses all their available space . In January , the Henzies started working with contractors to reconfigure the space for better utilization .
Henzie ’ s Art Studio in downtown Gravette is a little bit of everything – studio workshop , classroom , gallery and workspace . Its footprint is well-used by young children , school-age students , working age adults and seniors . It ’ s a long way from Hong Kong to a small town in Northwest Arkansas that can ’ t be found on every map . But everything has come together for the Henzies and their quest to work in the world of art .
