A roll-to-roll printer that doubles productivity
Karibu, swissQprint’s first roll-to-roll wide-format printer, is a
UV inkjet with a maximum print width of 3.4 metres. Because
of its cassette system, rolls are loaded and ready to print
within minutes. Karibu features a light box next to the printing
area for immediate and continuous quality control of backlit
prints. Karibu also has a mesh kit integrated with the print
bed. This makes clean and simple work of processing permeable
substrates, as well as full-bleed printing. A mouse click by the
operator sends the Karibu print beam – which is movable in the
X direction – from its standard position to the mesh position.
Printing can then start immediately. The Karibu offers a dual-
roll option capable of handling two rolls, each up to 1.6 metres
wide. This doubles productivity. Karibu has 136 keys ranged
across the print bed width. Each one opens or closes a vacuum
channel, eliminating air leakage even in the gap between dual
rolls. SwissQprint has also developed inks specifically for the
Karibu. The cured ink layer is suitable for “all imaginable” roll
media. The inks are NVC-free and Greenguard Gold certified.

A printer that handles matte and gloss finishes
Canon USA’s new Océ Colorado 1650 large-format printer
introduces Océ FLXfinish technology that enables both matte
and gloss print finishes, a new ink, increased media and appli-
cation versatility, and double-sided printing. FLXfinish is a
new approach to LED curing that allows the operator to
choose between matte or gloss output for each print without
the need to change inks or media. The technology also
enables the use of more porous media, including uncoated
papers and soft signage materials such as polyester textiles.
Each ink droplet is ‘fixed’ immediately on jetting, preventing
absorption by the substrate. A new version of Canon UVgel
bending, creasing and folding – without risk of cracking.
Integrated, double-sided printing supports both print-side-
out and print-side-in media. The 64” printer can handle
self-adhesive vinyl, canvas, wall coverings and front-lit and
back-lit graphics that require a high degree of flexibility for
finishing, mounting and framing.
High quality roll media and board printing
With Durst’s P5 350 (print width up to 3.5 m) and upgraded
P5 210 (print width up to 2.1 m), Durst is expanding its P5
portfolio with two new hybrid wide-format solutions. The new
printing systems can print on both roll media and boards. With
a unique multi-roll option, users can even load rolls during
printing to reduce set-up times. The printing systems are
equipped with energy-efficient LED technology and are supplied
with integrated Durst Workflow Print software and the Durst
Analytics monitoring tool. Both printers offer up to 1200 dpi,
multi-track options for up to six parallel boards, automatic
media width and thickness detection, foldable and smooth-
running roller tables, and dependable ink-refill systems. Both
can also be equipped with peripheral systems for 3/4 auto-
mation or full automation. Durst offers four ink systems for its
P5 printing systems: Durst Rigid LED Ink, Durst Roll LED Ink,
P5 Premium WG Ink and
P5 POP HS Ink. All benefit
from a large colour
gamut, high system sta-
bility, a wide variety of
applications and low ink
consumption.

Technology that extends print head life
Canon Océ Colorado 1650 Digital Sign Technologies’ Print Head Doctor (PHD) machines
are fully mobile-app-controlled devices that can clean 2D and
3D inkjet print heads safely and automatically. Its new Model
15 can switch any of its ports between pressure and vacuum,
enabling it to run complex recovery programs in one set-up
with no operator intervention. In addition, users can create
custom recovery programs and remotely control a PHD15 via
the Android app. Users can safely revive old print heads and
extend their longevity, decreasing the number of print heads
they have to purchase and “saving themselves thousands of
dollars in costs.” Digital Sign Technologies (Mississauga, ON)
