Answering the Call to Help Struggling Students

Texas school accountability ratings indicate that family income is associated with student performance . As the population ’ s income drops , student achievement declines in close correlation . In an effort to help children reach their full potential , H . O . P . E . Tutoring offers free , individualized tutoring and focuses its services on second through eighth-graders in East Arlington .
Since 1996 , H . O . P . E . Tutoring has offered academic coaching and summer camps to underserved children . H . O . P . E . offers its afterschool tutoring in Arlington libraries , churches , schools , and online . Afterschool programs garnered much success with 88 % of H . O . P . E .’ s students improving their report card grades . Bringing tutors directly into the classroom reaches more children and enhances teacher / tutor collaboration . This year , H . O . P . E . began to provide in-class tutoring at two elementary schools in East Arlington . The results have been excellent . One teacher said ,
“ Thank you so much for all of the hard work you are doing with our kids every week . We see improvement in class participation , confidence , and overall well-being of the students . I see definite improvement in spelling tests and foundational skills such as adding and subtracting with regrouping . Improvement of scores on the curriculum assessments are slow and varied by student , but are slowly coming . Moreover , some of these students crave the one-on-one time with you and benefit personally from the attention . They come back re-energized and proud of themselves .”
