COMMUNITY IMPACT HIGHLIGHT
ADVOCATES FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY!
Advocates for Special People( ASP) was founded by a group of dedicated parents who wanted their children with intellectual disabilities to continue growing and thriving after aging out of the school system. That vision gave rise to Special Connexion, a network of four adult day camps that support the development of essential life and social skills while encouraging community integration.
As participation grew— especially post-COVID— transportation became a barrier to fully engaging participants in community activities. Thanks to grant funding, ASP acquired transportation for all four Connexion sites, allowing participants to explore museums, parks, libraries, restaurants, and entertainment venues throughout Arlington and beyond.
These outings aren’ t just fun— they’ re powerful learning experiences. Participants practice ordering food, navigating new environments, and socializing with peers in dynamic, real-world settings.
One parent shared,“ Attending Day Camp allows my camper to enhance his independent living and social skills. He loves picking out movies at the library and going on field trips with friends.”
In 2024, Connexion participants visited over 150 destinations. They explored the Arlington Museum of Art’ s One Point Five Degrees immersive exhibit, attended The Nutcracker ballet, enjoyed performances like Flat Stanley, and participated in weekly dance classes with the United Performing
Arts Center. The program also fosters strong partnerships with local institutions, including UTA, where participants visited the planetarium and attended live science demonstrations. The impact is clear. In our annual family survey, 96 % of families reported improved independence and social skills in their loved ones.
As one parent summarized,“ This program has allowed my son to grow in communication, socialization, and independence. I’ m so thankful for the opportunities it provides.”
