Dan was fully equipped for the day with fishing rods of every size , flies , lures , and all the gear I could have possibly needed . Their preparedness and expertise instilled a sense of security , making me feel confident in this new environment .
Their expertise put me at ease . I felt well-cared for and safe — two things that a highly organized person in an entirely new place , learning a previously unknown skill , needs to feel to have a good time .
You can show up to a place like Wheaton ' s Lodge with just a basic level of enthusiasm , and they will help you with the rest . Need to learn how to get into a canoe ? They will help you . Need to learn how to hold a spin rod and how to cast ? They ’ ve got it . Want to learn how to sustainably catch-and-release ? They will show you how . Their welcoming nature ensures that everyone , regardless of their skill level , feels included and accepted .
They can teach you everything you need to know .
I wanted to absorb as much as possible , so I spent my day on Spednic Lake , talking Dan ' s ear off about his life and how he acquired his skills . He told funny jokes and helped us reel in and release the fish . I practiced repeatedly and caught a few good fish and a few laughable ones that we immediately threw back . Not once did I feel judged ; not once was I looked down upon for being a beginner . I took in the breathtaking landscape and listened to every story . To top it all off , we were treated to a singular culinary experience — the shore lunch . We spent two hours cooking , eating , and chatting with our friends and guides . I wanted to cry tears of joy . It was a scrumptious and life-affirming meal .
It was one of the best days of my life . Truly .
