GET TO KNOW LANCE WHEATON
Master Maine Guide & Canoe Builder
“ Only take what you need . If you don ’ t need it , let it be ,” says Lance Wheaton , echoing a lesson passed down from his father and grandfather . ‘ We ’ re part of this beautiful place , and it ’ s our responsibility to take care of it .’
Wheaton attributes his success in Northern Maine to a deeprooted sense of community and a value for hard work . He served in the Army National Guard and grew up in Forest City . He knew early on that he wanted to build his life there and support his family .”‘ I started crafting canoes to help provide for my family . I had three young daughters and wanted them to grow up feeling connected to this place .” ( R- Lance is pictured with his daughter April .)
Wheaton ’ s canoe workshop is impressive and houses the molds , tools , and wood used to make traditional square stern canoes . His craftsmanship is tangible , with everything in its place showcasing an incredible attention to detail . It is a treasure to visit and to hear him talk about his process . A Master Maine Guide , Wheaton served on the Advisory Council for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife . Recently , he received the prestigious Wiggie Robinson Legendary Guide Award , honoring his distinguished career as an outdoorsman , leader , and conservationist . He can spin-ayarn as well as any good fishing guide , and shares stories about his adventures with guests and animal encounters in the wild .
“ I want younger generations to come here , to fall in love with nature and the outdoors , and to embrace the way we care for one another . Taking care of each other — that ’ s
