LOCALS IN THE KNOW Tammi Matula , is a Registered Maine Guide and PE teacher at East Grand School , channels her love for the outdoors into a transformative program that empowers students of all ages . She teaches outdoor skills designed to build confidence and resilience , from learning to ride a bike to paddling whitewater as teens . Her primary goal is to show students they can achieve difficult things through hard work , helping them develop inner motivation and perseverance .
The school ’ s outdoor education program , established nearly three decades ago with guide Dave Conley , now serves students as young as four . Under Tammi ’ s guidance , students experience a range of activities like hiking , cross-country skiing , snowboarding , archery , rock climbing , fire building , and various types of canoeing . Each activity fosters confidence , encourages teamwork , and sparks a love for the outdoors .
Tammi also connects students with their community through local races , trail service projects , and regional adventures , including Big Rock Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain trips . She believes these experiences allow students to see themselves as lifelong athletes and adventurers , even if they don ’ t pursue organized sports . The program reflects the strength of community support in the region , where residents are dedicated to creating enriching experiences for youth and ensuring access to the area ’ s natural beauty . Tammi hopes her students will carry forward a lasting appreciation for the outdoors , building a foundation of self-belief and a commitment to their community .
