Agriculture, also called farming or husbandry, is the cultivation of animals, plants and other life forms for food, fiber, biofuel, medicinals and other products used to sustain and enhance human life. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization.
In Romania’s Carpathian mountain highlands, one of the European Union’s most economically depressed regions, people rise early and many are outside by sunrise working hard.
The scenes of dawn in Romania’s Mures, Bukovina and Harghita provinces are reminiscent of another age. Men and boys are cutting grass with
scythes, horse-drawn carts are
carrying milk pails to market,
women are hoeing rows of
potatoes, and shepherds
and their barking dogs are
herding sheep and cows to high
pasture“It’s either do the work
early or later when it gets hot,
”said Istvan Selekes.“That has
always been the way here.”
