GRAND CHALLENGES
LECTURE SERIES
The Grand Challenges take place in the architecturally inspiring spaces at Keele Hall.
Our Mission
The Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Keele
brings together researchers from Health, Humanities
and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences both
within the university and from across the world.
It is a vibrant, welcoming hub which offers spaces
and places for conversations between diverse fields
and for debating the challenging questions that we
face today. Its energising environment stimulates
the academic and cultural life of the University for all
students, our staff and the wider Keele community.

Grand Challenges
From the social and
environmental effects of
climate change to the impact
of technology on humans and
their relationships, we face
challenges that endanger
basic human needs, the
ways we organise and live
in our communities and which
influence life chances and
opportunities. Our choices,
priorities and the ways we
seek to deliver them will shape
futures and we can no longer
look to any one academic
discipline or research area
to provide solutions.
Our Grand Challenges
speakers offer their fresh
perspectives on the political,
ethical and intellectual
problems that we face today.
Following the colourful autumn
programme; Professors
David Croisdale-Appleby
on the Future of Health and
Social Care, Kate Pickett on
Inequality, Shane O’Neill on
the Fabric of Global Justice
and Andrew Stirling on
Emancipating the Processes
of Social Transformation,
Grand Challenges 2018
continues with more
stimulating questions,
topics and provocations
from an exciting line up of
distinguished presenters.
Our events are open to all and
free of charge and we look
forward to welcoming you to
the Institute of Liberal Arts
and Sciences and a Grand
Challenges Lecture very soon.
