Nico Rosberg is the 2016 Formula 1 World Champion!
He was crowned on a hot November night at the five star Yas Marina Circuit
after one of the most enthralling (and nail-biting) duels in the history of the
sport, as his Mercedes teammate and title rival Lewis Hamilton pulled out
all the stops and some cunning tricks to try and destabilise Rosberg, who
needed only to finish on the podium to win the title.
But he found himself expertly backed up into the path of Sebastian Vettel
and Max Verstappen late in the race, apparently defying the Mercedes
team’s rules of engagement.
The Silver Arrows driver, hunting his first F1 title, weathered everything
that Hamilton could throw at him. His crew even suggested that he allow
Vettel past with the finish line in sight - third would be good enough was
their logic.
But Rosberg hung in there rising to the occasion and in the end finishing
second to his nemesis, but it was enough... he was champion like his father
Keke in 1982. His demeanour and attitude, laced with humility earned him
respect on the night as he proved to be a worthy and deserved champion.
