Instruction THE CHIP FROM A HARD LIE Chip from a tight lie or a hard surface is a high risk shot and scares lot of amateurs. The shot has to be executed with perfection, as there is very little margin of error. 1 ith narrow little open stance place the ball back hands and weight leaning forward towards the target. (Pic 1) Playing the Shot To play chip from a bare lie club selection is very important. I fi nd sand wedges / lob wedges with wide prominent bounce on the sole a bad choice, as prominent 22 GolfPlus Junior March-April 2020 2 bounce on these clubs gets in contact with the hard ground fi rst before the leading edge, resulting in raising the leading edge of the club of the ground which stems topping / thinning the ball. I recommend clubs with less bounce like nine iron / pitching wedge with sharper leading edges for the hard pan shots which sit tight close to the ground for tight lie shots. (Pic 2)
