EARLY

EXTENSION
- By Amandeep Johl
WHAT IS EARLY
EXTENSION?
Early Extension is referred to as “any
forward movement (thrust) of the lower
body towards the golf ball during the
downswing”. This swing characteristic
causes the arms and club to get stuck
behind your body during the downswing
and forces your torso to raise up and
elevate through the hitting zone.
The Causes of Early Extension could be
both Physical and swing related.
The Physical Causes stem from a weak
core. In technical language, your gluteal
and abdominal strength and your control
of the pelvic musculature helps control
the orientation and movement of the
pelvis during the downswing. These
muscles prevent the lower body from
thrusting towards the golf ball during the
down-swing. The inability of a player to
do a deep squat as shown in the picture is
indicative that the cause of early extension
maybe Physical related. In case you fi nd
that you are early extending, go to your
qualifi ed trainer and get yourself assessed
and work on the problem before altering
your technique. (Pic 1)
