Ominack Terriati by Eve Ruddle
His voice had never sounded so cold. His breath was ice. His heart was frozen. He wasn’ t Tommy Linnet anymore …
It all mysteriously began with his whole family gathered around a hospital bed, whilst his great great grandad took his last breaths. They had all been here for hours now and one by one slowly left the room. All alone, Tommy gazed longingly into his dying relatives eyes. Ever since he could remember, he thought his grandad was boring but now the connection was stronger than ever. A salty tear trickled down his cheek, as the beep of his grandad’ s heart on the machine echoed around the room; silence screamed.
Suddenly, Tommy’ s grandad’ s eyes rolled to the back of his head and his skin drained to a sickening yellow. Rapidly, he sat up and screamed, sending shivers crawling down Tommy’ s spine.“ Ominack Terriati,” a low, hoarse voice echoed from his grandad’ s mouth.“ The monster reborn,” he then whispered lying back down, as a long beep from the machine brought doctors racing into the tiny room.
Later that night, Tommy’ s feet dragged him upstairs to his bed. His head was whizzing from the event that had occurred that day. Lying on his mattress, a sudden cold bead of sweat ran down his face and a sensation of being watched lingered over him. Ominack Terriati repeated mysteriously over and over in his head, as the demon inside clutched his heart. He was sinking deeper into the terror within … rapidly taking deep breaths he recovered, though his heartbeat seemed to slow down …
Dawn broke the next day and sent sunbeams darting around in Tommy’ s room. Yawning, he stood up and stretched but, like holding kilograms of weight, he felt heavy and pulled down, as if gravity was too strong. Despite it, he clambered down the stairs and started to devour his breakfast.“ Tommy, you look like you’ ve caught death. You’ re as pale as a sheet!” his mum exclaimed!“ I think you should stay off school!”“ Fine by me!” Tommy smiled, glad to miss a day of hard work and torture, in his opinion! His mum left for her job leaving Tommy alone. It was ok; he liked it that way.
Just before dusk, Tommy and his mum ate up their tea of pasta when she noticed another peculiar symptom.“ Tommy, you really are ill! Your lips are red and eyes are large like a cat hunting prey!” It was true; his lips were like a withering rose.“ It’ ll just be the sauce,” Tommy reassured his mum but suddenly, he fell silent.
