STAMPEDE
To follow the Dinosaur Trail
and get to some land lizards,
you will have to divert south
to Winton before returning
north to Hughenden on the
Flinders Hwy. The Matilda
Country Tourist Park is
the main caravan park
in town. The brilliant Waltzing
Matilda Centre is under re-
construction after a fire in
June of 2015; meanwhile
the information centre
is on Elderslie Street.
Here you can find out about
and book a tour of the
Dinosaur Stampede National
Monument at Lark Quarry
Conservation Park (110km
SW of Winton, bookings
are mandatory).
The stampede site is
fascinating; guides bring to
life the dramatic events of a
single day 95 million years
ago when two small species
of dinosaurs, totalling about
150 individuals, came
to drink beside a lake and
were attacked by a theropod.
Hundreds of footprints reveal
the ensuing panic and chaos.
Riveting and unforgettable!
Also near Winton is the
Australian Age of Dinosaurs
(24km SE). This museum
offers tours that include their
Fossil Preparation Lab, the
Collection Room that houses
the most complete examples of
Australovenator wintonsis (aka
Banjo) and Diamantinasaurus
matildae (aka Matilda) along
with others, and Dinosaur
Canyon with life-size dinosaur
