TOWING AND TOURING TIPS !

WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION HITCHES
Weight distribution hitches are excellent pieces of equipment . Here ’ s why : the effect of towball mass on the rear of a tow vehicle is like pushing down on the handles of a wheelbarrow . It increases the weight on the rear wheels of the tow vehicle and reduces the weight on the front wheels .
A weight distribution hitch is , in effect , a semi-flexible beam that transfers the imposed weight back onto the tow vehicle ’ s front wheels ( and marginally to the caravan ’ s ). In effect , it levers them back down .
Whether or not you need one depends on a number of variables . As a starting point , measure the difference at the wheel arches , front and back , on level ground , when hitched and unhitched . If there is a difference of more than 20mm – some say 50mm – then you should seriously consider one . When it comes to levelling your rig , however , it is always sensible to consult a caravan specialist .
