| HITCHING UP WITH MAX TAYLOR LOCK AND LOAD Did you know that a humble bottle of red wine weighs 1.2kg? Or that a six-pack of beer tips the scales at over 3kg? If that doesn’t sound like much, you’re not seeing the bigger picture. This issue, we’ve delved into the issue of RV payload capacity, the number that dictates the total permissible combined weight of everything loaded into a van. We are all probably a little guilty when it comes to throwing everything we think we will need for our holiday into the van, without much thought as to whether doing so will exceed our van’s Aggregate Trailer Mass. Talk about throwing caution to the wind. Every caravan, camper trailer, motorhome and fifth wheeler has a built-in maximum weight that takes into account a host of factors, such as the van’s group axle and suspension ratings. In the case of motorhomes and tow vehicles, the maximum weight is referred to as the Gross Vehicle Mass. Exceed that built- in weight limit at your own peril. I can’t imagine the authorities being too sympathetic if you’re found to have done the wrong thing should an accident occur. The point is, as insignificant as an object might appear, it probably weighs more than you would’ve believed. Even a handful of dunny rolls weighs over 0.5kg. And I was shocked to discover that the owner’s manual of my van has more than 1.6kg of heft. Yep, even your owner’s manual is counted as payload. So proceed with caution and common sense the next time you load your rig. gorv.com.au 4 6 10 16 18 22 26 28 Top attractions in the Red Centre 32 News and gear about the RV lifestyle RV CATALOGUE Links to all of our magazines 36
