RV FEATURE
NISSAN PATROL
The MY2020 Patrol arrived around Christmas last year with new sheetmetal , suspension improvements and new features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking and crosstraffic alert .
The big Patrol is an effortless heavy-duty tow hauler . While the engine needs to dig deep into its power band to climb steep hills , you won ’ t need to hold anyone up while doing so . It has all the hill-climbing and overtaking performance you ’ ll ever need .
Being a large displacement and relatively lowtech V8 that has to lug around almost three tonnes of vehicle alone , you can ’ t be too surprised with its heavy-duty towing fuel average of around 20L / 100km . To draw the often-made comparison , though , it ’ s about what the LandCruiser turbo-diesel achieves in the same conditions .
The Patrol is a cosseting and stable tow tug with no indication that it intends to allow the van behind to sway . The suspension does on occasion feel as though it might be a little too soft with a trailer behind , with badly undulating roads inducing a nose-bobbing pitching .
