LETTERS FROM THE ROAD RECALL OUR HISTORY My wife made ANZAC biscuits to eat while we stand at our front gate at 6am on the 25th April and remember why we have such freedom in this wonderful country. To think about the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could be free, the hardship and fear of war, the hardship of not being able to purchase fuel, bread, groceries and clothing, let alone toilet paper without a ration card for those items. Having street signs removed and covers over your vehicle lights, blackout curtains on all windows of your home. Hearing an air raid siren and wondering if you will survive the night. Waking up in the morning, if you were able to get any sleep, to find that your neighbour’s house is no longer there. And this went on for six years, not just a few months. When you think about these things, it makes our current isolation pale into insignificance. We know that when we awake in the morning we can chat to our neighbours over the fence, we can phone or email our friends and families. Many of our ancestors never got that chance. Dennis McCullagh Whispering Gums Park, Vic MOUSING THE SHACKLE I read the RV Workshop story (GoRV #38) about the hole in the bolt of the D-shackle and why it’s there. The hole in the bolt of the D-shackle is so that the bolt can be moused to the shackle, preventing it from working loose from vibrations or hard knocks. ‘Mousing’ is a naval term where they mouse the anchor to the chain. I hope this description helps you all out. The world, our country and our parents went through worse than this pandemic, just 70-odd years ago. We were either too young or not yet born to remember it, but it is part of our history. We need to educate our younger generations and those who now call Australia home about our history so they can look forward to the future and keep up the Aussie spirit. Lest We Forget.
