LETTERS FROM THE ROAD
TOWING CONCERN
It is my understanding that the towing
capacity of the tow vehicle must meet or
exceed the capacity of the trailer being towed.
The caravan in the article about the Evernew
E2000 RTX 40 has a capacity (ATM) of
4000kg while the D-Max is permitted to tow
3500kg. Is this not illegal?

Hi Steve. The tow vehicle just needs to be able
to legally tow the actual weight of the trailer
and legally handle the actual ball weight. In the
case to which you refer, the setup was legal.
However, I am the first to admit that it was
not ideal, and said as much in the review. It is
my preference that the vehicle be able to
legally tow the ATM of the trailer, and
preferably even more.

Perhaps you could rate the routes, based on
the number/severity of curves, changes in
altitude, driver effort, length, etc. I'm sure you

FANCY VANS
Well, I’ve seen it all. So many fancy caravans
with everything that opens and shuts. Honestly,
I don’t know why some people leave home.
I’m on my fourth van, starting with a 14ft pop-
top Bushtracker and ending up with a 2002
Jayco Freedom. With my modifications and
dust-proofing, it has served us well in the
backroads areas we explore.
When the opportunity arose to review this
new Evernew offroader, it was not possible to
secure a 4000kg-rated vehicle and I had to
settle for the D-Max. But, again, it was legal
and I would not have done it otherwise. – Ed There are many new RVers on the road now who
display no etiquette. And as for the disgusting
people leaving rubbish and confetti (toilet paper)
everywhere, it’s absolutely disgusting.
ROUTES OVER THE RANGE Maybe a course should be included with every
RV rental and new RV sold.

establishing the best road to cross the Great
