MATCHES/LIGHTER
& FIREWOOD
I’m lumping matches/lighter in with firewood
because they take up virtually no space or
weight.
You could argue that if travelling with a caravan
or camper trailer with an inbuilt gas stove that
firewood is less necessary than, say, a shovel.
But fires boost morale, provide warmth and,
importantly, become a social gathering point –
essential for any camping trip.
And have you ever tried toasting
marshmallows over a gas flame? It’s just not
the same.

COOKING POT/PAN
Ideally, you’d have an array of pots, pans and
cutlery. But remember: this is my list of top-
five ‘must-haves’. And without something to
cook in – and even out of, if you had to –
you’re reduced to a pedestrian mix of
sandwiches and anything you can eat directly
from a can.
In a pinch, you could also use a pot to boil
suspect water (recognising this doesn’t
always kill all bacteria and viruses), or to boil
water in order sterilise, say, a baby bottle.
