make the line stretch the distance between the
branches, I had to connect two packs worth of
segments – 4m of washing line! – in order to test
it out.
As expected, 4m of washing line sagged a little
under the weight of the wet clothes; however, a
standard 2m line holds its ‘shape’ quite well.
My van’s front boot is a jumble of bits and pieces.
Some items are definitely more important than
others. Space is at a premium and I therefore tend
to leave the fold-out clothesline at home. This
contraption has the shape of a mini Hills Hoist
and, frankly, I find it a little cumbersome for day-
to-day campsite use.
Facebook, however, kept showing me the Slide
n’ Dry Pegless Clothesline, which is also sold by

I thought this could be the answer to our wet-
clothes dilemma. In short: it was.
The Pegless Clothesline is made in Melbourne.
Each pack contains 12 brightly-coloured segments
that click together to form 2m of washing line. A
couple of metal hooks on a short bungee rope are
provided as well, allowing you to hook the line to
anything that’s convenient.
Most people use their awning poles to secure the
line. I, however, found a couple of trees but to

Now, the main feature of this line – the fact it
doesn’t require pegs – works brilliantly. Each
segment has cutouts into which you slide a corner
of each article of clothing. These cutouts grip the
clothes tightly, even in a strong wind.
Best of all, the Slide n’ Dry Pegless Clothesline
weighs virtually nothing and takes up virtually no
space in the van. And that’s why I have since sent
my old clothesline to the big campsite in the sky…
