RV OPINION BY THE NUMBERS We asked the Caravan Industry Association of Australia why the holiday park industry was so important, not just to the happiness of Australian travellers but to the health of the country overall. These figures tell an eye-opening story… • Direct caravan park revenue contributes about $3 billion to the Australian economy each year. This is in addition to visitor expenditure of all caravan and campers, which amounts to about $8.6 billion annually. The overall caravan industry is estimated to be worth $20 billion to the Australian economy each year, according to Tourism Research Australia. 30 \ • For the 12 months to September 2018 (the most recent data from Tourism Research Australia), there were 54.8 million nights spent RVing or camping by Australians in Australia, and in total there were 12.6 million caravan/camping trips taken by Australians in Australia. • Thirty to 54-year-olds represent the largest caravan and camping demographic, taking 5.9 million trips in this 12-month period, but the most recent data suggests that the largest growth was in 20-29-year- old age bracket, which increased by 16 per cent to 2.2 million trips.
