RV MAIL LETTERS FROM THE ROAD TOTAL VISION I read your article regarding tow mirrors (GoRV #16) with great interest and I wish to say that I have the clip-on Milenco mirrors and I cannot fault them. They are easy to use, easy to attach and, more importantly, do not swing with draughts, etc., and give clear vision when towing the van. Having been a bus driver now for some 22 years, a firefighter and, more importantly, having driven a variety of trucks over the years, I understand the importance of knowing what’s behind you. This is just as important as knowing what is in front. So what provides you with the best rear vision is an individual aspect but everyone, please, get the best you can and drive safely and within speed limits as there is nothing worse than a smart a- travelling at 120km/h and overtaking all with scant regard for safety. I might add that calling up trailing trucks can be helpful if they can’t see past you looking for overtaking opportunities: “Blue truck, clear a kilometre after this Kombi passes. I’ll back off when I see you pull out.” Common courtesy helps everyone on the highway: “Car carrier, go; I’m waiting for you,” is something you could say over the UHF on overtaking lanes when you know he will have more ‘grunt’ than you. Caravanners are on holidays, the truckie is working. For some reason, overdimensional pilots only warn oncoming trucks; caravanners showing an aerial are studiously ignored. Trucks only talk to other trucks. Perhaps it’s a cultural issue that ignores the fact we all pay our share of road taxes. Keep an eye on your mirrors. If you build up a ‘tail’, pull over when safe. The radio might speak: “… in the caravan, thanks mate.” Hans Witteveen TOW MIRRORS Via email USING UHF If you have an opinion or thought about the RV lifestyle, or about this digital magazine, we’d like to hear it!
