A number of projects are being done by multiple organizations to beautify and improve Ottumwa , and to bring new people in . These include much-needed renovations in areas like Church Street and the West End , and developing land for new businesses to come in . Other groups at the state level are trying to bring people into Iowa , including new residents to Wapello County .
Helgerson Flats
The Greater Ottumwa Partners in Progress is working on its site recertification for Helgerson Flats , which Executive Director Marc Roe expects to have done by Dec . 31 . With that certification , the Iowa Economic Development Authority will deem them ready to build on .
The site consists of 81 acres of developable land , which could be used for an array of different industries and businesses . Roe says GOPIP is working with the city and the county to develop an incentives package to attract companies to the area .
“ It ’ s really going to depend on who ultimately ends up being the purchaser and what their needs are , and then we can develop around that . But the site master plan that we have right now is several strategically placed , 100,000-square-foot facilities ,” Roe said . “ And obviously , it could be wet industry , it could be dry industry , it could be data servers — it could be anything at this point .”
