Cargill and HELM
Qore , a joint venture between Cargill and HELM , is designed to help leading brands replace fossil-based chemistries with bio-based intermediates , enabling them to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions . The joint venture will focus on producing QIRATM , the next-generation 1,4-butanediol ( BDO ) that can be used as an intermediate in products like spandex , biodegradable plastics and polyurethane coatings . Made biologically through the fermentation of plant-based sugars , QIRA can save up to 93 % of greenhouse gas emissions when replacing widely used chemical intermediates made from traditional fossil sources . Included in the venture is a $ 300 million investment to build the first commercial-scale , renewable BDO facility in the U . S . on the existing Cargill campus in Eddyville , Iowa , expected to be completed in 2024 .
C & C Manufacturing
C & C Manufacturing expanded to Ottumwa in 2017 when the owners of C & C Machining Company in Centerville purchased Al-jon Manufacturing , which was founded in 1963 . The company is a manufacturer and distributor of heavy equipment for the scrap metal recycling , waste management and airport maintenance equipment industries . The machines are used in a variety of applications , including scrap metal crushing , landfill compaction and airport runway snow clearing . It was announced in late September 2021 that a private investment group , a partnership between Granite Creek Capital Partners , LLC , and Equivu Capital , LLC , has acquired a majority interest in the company . Equivu is the investment arm of entrepreneur Salvatore Calvino , who is the CEO of C & C . He has experience as an executive and entrepreneur of several aviation services companies . Granite Creek is a Chicago-based investment group that focuses on providing capital and operational resources to lower middle-market companies engaged in manufacturing , business services , health care and agribusiness .
JBS Continuing the long tradition of meat packing plants in Ottumwa , JBS USA Pork purchased the Cargill pork operation in 2015 . JBS was founded in 1953 in Brazil when the founder opened a small butcher shop , processing five head of livestock each day . JBS Foods is one of the world ’ s largest food companies . The Ottumwa facility was built in 1976 , sitting on 10 acres of land with 550,000 square feet of building space . The plant produces more than 6 million 8-ounce servings of pork per day and more than 1 billion pounds per year .
The plant is the largest employer in Wapello County with more than 2,400 team members ( including more than 130 veterans ) representing more than 34 countries .
