Francisco de Zurbarán was a Spanis painter. He was born in 1598 in Fuentes de
Cantos (Spain) and he was died in 1664 in Madrid (Spain). He is known primarily for
his religious paintings. The mayority of his paintings have been lost and 11 are in the
Museum
of
“El
Prado”
This painting is called “Naturaleza muerta con limones, naranjas y una rosa”.
Zurbarán made this painting in 1633. In this painting there are a plate with lemons, a
hamper with oranges, other plate with a cup and one rose.
The reason of this painting is traditionally a tribute for the Virgin Marie. The
lemonades represent the fidelity, the oranges represent the virginity and the rose
represents the divine love.
