Introduction
The sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) is a member of the citrus family, along with
mandarins (tangerines), lemons, limes, grapefruit, and kumquats. Among the fruits
we could choose, oranges (sweet and bitter) are very famous in Seville, Spain and
worldwide.
By electing the orange as a the product our students were going to study, we settled a
challenge in multiple ways. The main purpose was being aware of the oranges
production of our area, of the business posibilities of our zone, of the ways of local
consumerism. In addition, all the activities planned in the developement of this
program were lead to promote a healthy lifestyle derived from oranges and fruits in
general.
The study of producing and growing oranges allowed our students to know how to
grow in a traditional way or by using chemicals. At the same time, we found a way to
know the charactetistics of the soil, to make an evaluation of the environmental
impact of the chemicals used for growing and value the incidence of the climatic
characteristics.
Finally, we insisted in the idea that knowing local products (oranges in this case)
helps us to be concious about basic aspects of our identity and our heritage.
The way we dealed with this task was based on three main areas:
- Scientific and Technology Area
Making compost
Cromatography
Plantation of herbaceous plants
Designing a label
- Sociolinguistic Area
Debates
Presentations
Reading and comprehension
Doing an interview
How to read a nutrition fact label
- Artistic Area
Design a logo
Planning, editing and filming an advertisement
Painting oranges
