Risk factors that can increase the likelihood of having prostate cancer include a family history of the disease , a diet high in animal fats and low in vegetables , inherited gene mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2 , and race . Statistics show Black men have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer . Since risk increases with age , men with a family history should begin screening at age 45 , and all men should receive annual screenings once they reach age 50 .
