The surgeon noted that many people just deal with their issues day to day because they might not know that an alternative is available.“ If there was an option that can make you feel better, I think people would gladly take it,” she said.
Dr. Henry added that providers might not always refer patients because of the travel time that used to be involved. Having trained at the University of Kentucky, that played a role in her decision to relocate to London last September.
“ I saw people who were having to come from hours and hours away,” she said.“… Up until this point, there’ s not been somebody that can do these things and so maybe the provider doesn’ t think about it.”
But if travel is necessary, at least that time is reduced by coming to London. Dr. Henry said one patient came to see her from Cranks, a community in Harlan County near the Virginia state line.
Post-surgery treatment often requires occupational therapy, which can be done even closer to home. Dr. Henry praised the certified hand therapists she’ s encountered in Corbin,
London, Somerset and Hyden.
Therapy needs may vary from none to 6-8 weeks( coming off of an injuryrelated issue).
“ It’ s rare for people to need therapy after that eightweek mark,” Dr. Henry said, adding that it can depend on the patient as well.
Dr. Henry noted that she uses the most modern techniques and that London is equipped for microsurgery and minimally invasive endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery.
Most procedures she performs can be done on an outpatient basis. Generally speaking, Dr. Henry sees patients in clinic on Mondays and Tuesdays, and operates on Wednesdays and Thursdays with Fridays being a mix.
