the time, raising two young daughters— Eliana, then in first grade, and Adalyn, just starting Head Start. Life was busy, and it would’ ve been easy to ignore the growing concern. But something in her gut told her not to wait. She saw her primary care provider, who referred her to Baptist Health Corbin for imaging.
“ I remember coming here for my first mammogram on September 30, 2021. I was by myself; my husband was at work and the girls were at school. I tried to stay calm. I kept telling myself,‘ It’ s probably nothing. They’ ll confirm it’ s a cyst, and I’ ll go on with my life.’”
But instead of going home that day, Couch was asked to wait while the breast radiologist reviewed her scans. Soon after, she was scheduled for a biopsy. Within days, she received the call no one wants.
“ On October 11, I got a MyChart notification that my pathology report
was in,” she said.“ My husband was on the phone with someone, and I just said,‘ I need you right now.’ That’ s how I found out I had invasive ductal carcinoma. I was two weeks shy of my 32nd birthday.
“ The first thing I thought was,‘ How
am I going to take care of my girls?’” Couch continued, her voice thick with emotion.“ That’ s what broke me. Not the pain, not the fear of dying— but the idea that I might not be there for them. That I might not get to see them grow up.”
