1965:
start of the
united farm workers association
& the delano grape strike
Filipino-American grape workers and members of the Agricultural Workers Organizing
Committee (AWOC), led by Larry Itliong 4 , walked out on strike against the Delano-area
grape growers protesting years of poor pay and working conditions.
Cesar Chaves and Dolores Huertas, who had founded the National Farm Workers
Association in Delano, California, joined forces with the AWOC and formed the United
Farm Workers Association. Together, they organized the Grape boycott in the U.S. and
Canada. The grape boycott became one of the most significant social justice movements
for farm workers in the United States, lasting longer than five years. 5
1969:
free breakfast
for school children program
started by black panther party
The Black Panther Party started one of the first organized school breakfast food programs
in the US, addressing the cycle of hunger and poverty heavily present in low-income
communities of color. The work to ensure students were ready to learn garnered support
from community members, allowing them to serve free food to 20,000 children every
day. This work garnered support from the community, and ire from the FBI.
