NUTRITION • FOOD WORKER INTERVIEW DISCUSSION QUESTIONS food worker interview discussion questions TIME: 25 minutes PURPOSE: Unpack the podcast episode, engaging in a discussion around how our food choices have been shaped. MATERIALS: • Device to listen to the podcast; whiteboard and markers (optional) INSTRUCTIONS: Framework: According to Luz and Catriona, decolonizing diet is a framework. It is a call to reject the Standard American Diet, which relies heavily on processed foods and factory farming. While the diet is mostly plant-based, it isn’t inherently vegan or vegetarian. In the decolonial framework, there are multiple ways of eating, eating that honors individuals ancestors, traditions, and current ways of living. Have participants listen to the podcast episode and then ask them the following questions: 1. Have you heard the words “colonized” “colonization” and “decolonize” before? a. In what context? b. What do these words mean to you? (suggestion to write these on the board) 4. What was surprising to you about this conversation? 5. Was there anything that didn’t surprise you? 6. In what ways have all of our diets been colonized, regardless of the cultures we identify with? This could be how highly processed and cheap foods are made readily available and distributed. 7. What does decolonization mean to you? 8. What can we do as individuals to decolonize our diets? What about as a group? 122
