Η Μύκονος είναι το διασημότερο
νησί του Αιγαίου. Βρίσκεται
νοτιοανατολικά της Τήνου και
Ανατολικά της Σύρου, ενώ αποτελεί
ενιαίο νησιωτικό σύμπλεγμα μαζί
με τη Δήλο, τη Ρήνεια και μερικές
βραχονησίδες. Πρωτεύουσα του
νησιού είναι η Χώρα, στο δυτικό
τμήμα του.
Σύμφωνα με το μύθο, η Μύκονος
δημιουργήθηκε κατά τη Γιγαντομαχία,
όταν ο Ηρακλής εξόντωσε και έθαψε
τους Γίγαντες κάτω από τους
επιβλητικούς, βραχώδεις σχηματι-
σμούς του νησιού. Το όνομα
«Μύκονος», άλλωστε, δηλώνει το
«σωρό λίθων» ή τον «πετρώδη τόπο».
Μια άλλη εκδοχή, θέλει να πήρε το
όνομά της από τον ήρωα Μύκονο,
γιο του βασιλιά της Δήλου Άνιου.
Mykonos is the most famous island in the
Aegean. It is located southeast of Tinos and
east of Syros, and is part of the same island
complex along with Delos, Rhenia and some
rock islands. The capital of the island is
Chora, in the western part of the island.
According to legend, Mykonos was created
during the Gigantomachy when Hercules
exterminated and buried the Giants under
the imposing, rocky formations of the island.
The name ‘Mykonos’ loosely translates as
the ‘pile of stones’. In a different version the
island is name after the hero Mykonos, son
of the king of Delos.
